By Sue Savard

Before Recording:

  1. If your PC has a built-in microphone proceed to the To Record section.
  2. If your PC doesn’t have a microphone one can be added by plugging it into your sound card, usually found on the back of your computer.
  3. Once added, proceed to the To Record section.

To Record:

  1. Click on Start to open the program list in the lower-left corner of your screen.
  2. Scroll down the list until you spot a microphone icon for the program called “Voice Recorder.”
  3. A single click on the microphone or Voice Recorder words will open the program.
  4. A white screen with a microphone encircled in blue pops up and look like this:

  1. Get comfortable and hold your typed work in your hand. You can read all or part at one time.
  2. A single-click the microphone in the blue circle starts the recording process.
  3. Notice the time indicator at the top of the screen which advances as the recording continues.
  4. Also notice the double vertical bars (pause function) below the blue circle. Clicking here will pause the recording process and stop the time from advancing. To continue recording just click the pause again.
  5. The flag icon, next to the pause bars, adds a marker to your recording if you feel the need to remember a certain place it the recording

Begin to read – don’t rush. Notice the pulsating circles around the blue circle as you speak.

To stop recording:

  1. Single-click the white square in the center of the recording circle to stop the recording process.
  2. At the top of the screen, your computer has assigned a name to the file (which you can later change), the date, and recording time.

To listen to your story:

  1. Single-click the file name on the voice recorder screen, and it will start playing back.
  2. The arrow (play button) becomes a double bar (pause) until the recording is over. It may take a second or two to begin hearing your recording due to size.
  3. Sit back and enjoy or click the double bar to pause.
  4. If you notice something not quite right with your document as you follow along, circle it on your paper for later consideration.
  5. Note that these audio files are only playable using the Voice Recorder application.

Some Screen differences after the first playback

  1. Once you have played your first recording, the screen changes with the addition of a left-pointing arrow to the left of the recording title.
  2. Clicking on the arrow takes you back to the first screen you saw, but now shows all of the recordings that you have made.
  3. Stretching the Voice Recorder screen wider gives you a combined view of both screens like this:

To delete a recording:

  1. Right-click on the file name shown on the left side on the combo screen above.
  2. Select Delete.
  3. Select OK.
  4. Or, if you are in Playback mode or paused like the right side view of the combination view above, the file can be deleted by clicking on the trash can symbol at the bottom of the screen.

To rename the recording:

  1. Right-click on the file name shown on the left side on the combo screen above.
  2. Select Rename.
  3. Type a new name for your file.
  4. Select Rename.
  5. Or alternately, click on the Rename icon at the bottom of the screen just left of the three dots.

Happy listening!
